What is hosting?

Hosting is the online space needed to store your podcasts so that anyone with an Internet connection can download and listen to them.

There are two main things to bear in mind when it comes to hosting; storage and bandwidth.

Storage - the amount of storage you need depends on the length of your podcast episodes, the quantity of episodes and whether video or images have been used – videos in particular may take up more space.

Bandwidth - takes into account the amount of data that your web host allows to be transferred to and from your web site (some hosts set daily or monthly limits). In order to ensure you have enough bandwidth you need to try and estimate how many MBs each of your podcast files will be. You’ll also need this to calculate how much data transfer you’ll have from your web site.

Plus FREE access to the Podium Community Portal

Our hosting service now also includes access to the new community portal that makes it easier for users to:

• manage podcasts - allowing you to determine whether they are made public or private within the community, retained or deleted
• share podcasts with others - e.g. with parents or the wider school community
• listen to podcasts - the new portal provides a podcast player which allows you to listen to your podcasts there and then removing the need for subscribers to listen through a separate podcast player such as iTunes
• promote on your own web pages - the podcast player can be embedded onto the pages of your own site using the ‘Embed’ button

To access the portal go to www.podiumpodcasting.com/portal and enter your user name and password (issued upon purchase of Podium hosting). A help guide is available to help you get started.
